Crop Diversification Effects on Soil Aggregation and Aggregate-Associated Carbon and Nitrogen in Short-Term Rainfed Olive Groves under Semiarid Mediterranean Conditions

Soil particle aggregation and their associated carbon (C) nitrogen (N) content can provide valuable diagnostic indicators of changes in soil properties response to the implementation different agricultural management practices. In this sense, there is limited knowledge regarding impact intercropping on organic (SOC) total (TN) pools aggregates. This study aimed evaluate short-term effect (4 years) three crop diversifications rainfed olive orchards aggregation, SOC TN concentration stocks (SOC-S) under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions. Olive were diversified with Crocus sativus (D-S), Vicia sativa Avena rotation (D-O) Lavandula x intermedia (D-L) compared monocropping system (CT). samples collected at two depths (0–10 10–30 cm) analysed for aggregate mass, aggregate-size fractions obtained by wet-sieving method. Changes caused SOC-S also determined. Overall, after 4 years, a reduction values was observed. However, D-S increased macroaggregates (>250 ?m) percentage, Mean Weigh Diameter values, Geometric Value 0–10 cm. Across treatments, aggregate-associated C cm higher treatment, while layer, greatest found CT. Regarding SOC-S, significant losses recorded CT (?1.21 Mg ha?1) (?0.84 ha?1), D-O D-L showed similar those beginning study.
